Mac OS includes an Energy Saver feature that can cause hard drives connected in or to the computer to spin down after a period of inactivity. If Mac OS sends a command to spin down to an external drive, the drive may stop being detected by the computer. Uncheck the Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible box in Energy Saver.

Q80022408 - Running Monterey 12.6 on an M1 Studio Ultra, ARC-8050T3U-6A works fine except it continues to spin down into some kind of low-power mode, and then immediately spin back up again, even if it's not being accessed and the computer is idle.
