Answer

We have found that disabling APIC can drastically improve performance on some M/B. After some more testing, customer is now back at 155 MByte per second throughput when "noapci" is supplied. Under Linux (2.4 and 2.6 kernels) you can edit the grub entry during boot and add "noapic".
